Sports Betting Tips: Sportsbook Rules

by richallen

Many people tend to overlook the specific rules of their sportsbook since almost all the rules are universal. However, there are some instances that arise that can make you pull your hair out if you don’t understand the regulations that have been put in. Basically I’m talking about two cases where you will be left wondering “Did I just win?”

The first illustration comes from figuring out when a game is considered complete in the eyes of a sportsbook. When it comes to sports betting tips rarely will you see a football game called based on weather, or the lights going out in an NHL arena but it has happened in the past. The protocol for these types of games in the NBA, NFL and NHL is when there is five minutes or less left in the game, then it is considered official.

Now issue becomes even more important during the Major League Baseball season. Weather has canceled a countless number of games over the years and it is important to know when your game is final. If you have taken a money line in a game, it must go past five innings (or four and a half if the home team is ahead) for a game to be official. However, it is different for totals and run lines. These types of bets must go the full nine innings (or eight and a half if the home team is ahead) for the game to be considered complete. If you took the Red Sox +6 runs for the game and it is called after eight innings, then your bet is considered void. It’s a tough break, but when those cancellations go in your favor it can really save your butt.

The second illustration happens when a bettor pushes on a parlay or a teaser. The rules for these types of bets vary for every sportsbook. Some go with the notion that a push is a tie and the bet is canceled, or some will say that a push is a loss. So my sports betting tips advice you would be to straighten out the rules with your bookmaker before this problem arises. I say this because if you are dealing with a local bookie, they tend to make the rules in their favor as they go.  I’ve had this go against me in the past and it can really do some damage as your stakes get higher. So in general, clear up any misconceptions you have with your bookie, because you don’t want to end up losing big on mother nature’s account.
